How to speed up windows XP?

Speed Up Windows XP

Even after Microsoft has launched two newer versions of Windows OS, Windows Vista and Windows 7, there are millions of windows XP Lover users present that prefer the old and trusted copy of windows XP. PC users require antivirus programs and other PC infection protection programs that prevent their Windows XP computers from latest PC infections but even if your PC is protected from the infections, there are numerous that causes that make your windows XP system slower and degrade the performance. Hence it is important to know the ways to fix the problem so that you can speed up windows XP.

So, if you too are facing the slower Windows XP Performance then you should follow these steps properly to speed up windows XP:

Step 1: Defragmentation of Hard Drive

It is a very nice way to rearrange all the fragmented files that are not arranged properly. Since the Fragmentation happens when the computer writes files to disk without keeping everything together in one spot, so if you just saved a large file, it might be near the middle of the disk and part of it might be at the end, which means it takes longer for the disk to find it. So bringing those seperate parts together will make easy to find and is called defragmenting.

To do this open My Computer and choose the drive that you want to defragment. Then go to its properties and click on the Tools tab and the choose the Defragment option now and then click Defragment and wait for the process to finish.

Step 2: Improve Startup Times

At the startup time there are several applications that appears when windows starts and this causes slower startup. There are thee important places the startup folder, inside logon scripts and in some situations Registry. First go to the startup folder whose path is:

C:\Document and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Just open the folder and delete the shortcuts of applications that you don’t want to start when windows starts. To get other startup items type msconfig in run dialog box and press enter and there you can look for the startup tab. Uncheck all those applications that you don’t want to be started at windows startup. You should carefully do this because there are some important functions that are important for proper functioning of windows XP and need to start at startup so don’t do changes with those entries. Once done go to “C:\Windows\Tasks” where you can get rid of any programs that you don’t want to run automatically on a schedule.

Step 3: Stop unnecessary services

Windows runs background process called services that are silently run without any notification and give several supports and features access. But there are several services running even if you do not need to run them. So you should stop them and you can do this by this way:

Go to Start > Run > type “services.msc” and click Enter. Double click on the service that you want to get rid of and change the start up type to disable. You can find lots of services that usually do not need and safely stop the services. Example of some services are – Alerter, Distributed Link Tracking Client, Fast User Switching, Indexing Services, NetMeeting Remote Desktop sharing, Telnet, Secondary Logon and workstation etc. You need to do it safely and disable on those services which really need to stop.

Step 4: Clean up Windows XP Hard Drive

Over time, your system’s hard drive store lots of junk files, temporary installation files and other files that you never need to use again. These data eat disk space and hence it is recommended to do the Disk Cleanup using Windows Disk Cleanup Utility. You can invoke it by clicking on Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. Choose the disk that you want to clean and it will scan the disk and list all the useless and junk files that you can delete. Do it and it will release hundreds of MB if you are doing over a long time.

Step 5: BIOS Optimization

BIOS has hard-wired instructions for the computer’s motherboard. It is responsible for initializing the hardware at the system boot up. With proper BIOS tweaking, your BIOS will only provide small performance gains on most computers but on heavily customized or recently upgrade older computers, it can make a noticeable difference. You should also check for the updates because the BIOS manufacturers always work to provide the updates of BIOS which give better support to system.

Also Disable Unused Ports and turn off built in features on your motherboard in the situation you have already using newer hardware components.

Additionally you can do the uninstallation of unnecessary Programs, Convert FAT32 partitions to NTFS, Disable Indexing, Optimize Display, Prefetch Cleaning, Registry Optimization etc.

Doing all these in order to speed up windows XP works but it takes too much time as well as some steps are risky and if did not done properly will return Windows Corruption and errors too. So its better to use Windows XP Optimizer Tool and make your system running properly.
